The Lake Oconee Boomers Team

Updated on:

The pre-registration deadline is coming up fast for runners and walkers who want to get the best price and a guaranteed T-shirt for St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital’s inaugural 5K Run for Stroke Awareness.

Pre-registration for the June 28 race continues through June 14. Pre-registration costs only $25 per person, and everyone who pre-registers is guaranteed a T-shirt. After June 14, the cost rises to $30 and T-shirts will be available first-come, first-served on race day while supplies last.

To register, simply go to Active.com, Classic Race Services at www.classicraceservices.com, or call Good Samaritan Hospital at 706.540.8397.

The competitive run/walk will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, at the front doors of the hospital at 5401 Lake Oconee Parkway. Race timing will be provided by Classic Race Services, and prizes will be awarded three-deep to male and female winners overall, Masters, and in age brackets from 10-and-under to 75-and-over. The Good Samaritan 5K for Stroke Awareness is part of the Clover Glove and Black Box race series.

Before and after the race, participants and community members are invited to receive free blood pressure screenings and BMI measurements. Information also will be available about stroke, chest pain and cardiac catheterization, and a booth will be set up to assist with Medicaid enrollment for anyone who qualifies.

The event will raise awareness about stroke prevention and treatment, as well as funds for Good Samaritan’s stroke services. Runners and walkers are invited.

Special guests will include cardiologist Clay Chappell, M.D., of Oconee Heart and Vascular Center, and Darlene Morocco, RN, director of St. Mary’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Both will be available to talk with participants who have questions about heart health and how it affects your risk of stroke.

Race-day registration and runner check-in will open at 6:30 a.m. in the hospital’s front parking lot. Participants can park on the hospital campus.
