5 Tips for a Successful Job Interview

Congratulations on landing an interview for your dream job. You have spent a lot of time and energy to get this far. Here are some essential things you can do to prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

1. Research the Company

Taking time to get to know the company you are interviewing with helps you understand the job expectations.  Their website is a helpful resource because you can find information about senior officers and learn how they run the company. Research their product line and read customer reviews to ensure the company is successful and well-received within the community. Knowing your position is essential to the company and the community is necessary for long-term satisfaction on the job.

2. Keep Your Schedule Free the Night Before

Many people find that they are both nervous and excited the night before a big event. These feelings make getting a good night’s sleep difficult when it is vital to be well-rested.  Schedule trips to the gym or dinner with friends for other nights during the week, and leave the night before free from activities. Make it a priority to prepare for bed early in the evening. It’s a good idea to do activities that allow you to relax, such as taking a warm bath, reading a book or doing yoga before bed. Put together your updated resume and a portfolio of work samples to demonstrate why you are a good fit for the job. This is when you have the opportunity to show how all your experience makes you a good candidate for the position, so bring only your best work.  If you have any questions before the interview, make a list to bring along as well. Once the meeting nears its end, review the list and see if there are any unanswered questions. You must take the time to ask these questions because the interview is your opportunity to make sure you want the job.

5. Allow Extra Time in the Morning

Set your alarm earlier than you think you need to wake up. Allowing extra time keeps you from feeling rushed on an exciting day.  Make time to have a healthy breakfast or cup of coffee before getting dressed for the interview. You don’t want to spill anything on your clothes. Take extra time to check your appearance before you head out the door. It’s a good idea to check for traffic and review the route you take so you know how long the drive time is estimated to be. Leave at least 15 minutes early to allow for added congestion, finding a parking space and any missed turns along the way. It is better to arrive earlier than later for an interview.
