Common Mistakes To Avoid When Selling Your Home

Selling your home isn’t as easy as putting up a “for sale” sign and waiting for buyers. There are many logistics and emotional connections that could hinder your ability to sell your home if not handled correctly. Here are a few of the common mistakes to avoid when selling your home.

Pricing It Unrealistically High

The easiest way to push buyers away is with an absurd asking price. A high asking price can deter homebuyers from even considering your house, leaving your home on the market longer, and reducing buyer urgency. Have a professional agent or appraiser set a realistic price instead.

Skipping Renovations

Bypassing all renovations is not a good idea when selling your home. Most homebuyers don’t want to buy a home that will require a lot of extra work and investments on top of the initial purchase. Small projects like repainting your interior can even increase the value of your house.

Poor Photo Quality

The online homebuying market is extremely competitive. Potential buyers flock to real estate sites to get a look at what is available. If you post poorly lit, blurry, or sloppy photos, buyers will lose interest quickly. Likewise, if you don’t have enough images, how will you entice the buyers to see your house in person?

Selling at the Wrong Time

Putting your house on the market in the middle of winter isn’t ideal. Look toward spring and summer months, where worrying about poor weather for showings and moving isn’t a big concern.

Letting Emotions Get the Best of You

It can be hard to let go of a house, especially for a price below what you were hoping. As a seller, it’s your job to leave emotions at the door and handle the sale as a professional. Don’t take negotiations or comments made by interested parties too seriously.

Unrealistic pricing, skipping renovations, poor photo quality, selling at the wrong time, and getting emotional are a few of the most common mistakes to avoid when selling your home.
