As we get older, so does our bodies—rather we like it or not. A common issue many seniors experience is edema, and while this is uncomfortable to live with, here are the top tips to quickly reduce edema pain.

Identify the type of edema

Before jumping into a treatment plan, you should know that there are many types of edema and different causes, so it’s best to understand a basic overview. Some common causes are dietary issues and pregnancy, but edema can also be a result of some more serious health issues, such as kidney disease.

Reduce long periods of standing

Being on your feet for long periods can make edema flare up, causing a lot of discomforts. While you probably need to stand, or should stand at times, it’s best to reduce how much you’re on your feet while experiencing edema.

Exercise

Along with dietary issues, excessive weight is another reason for edema. One way to counteract this is by incorporating a consistent exercise routine into your lifestyle. However, it’s important to discuss this with your doctor before starting a workout plan, because depending on the severity of your edema, exercise could make it worse.

Compression socks

One of the top tips to quickly reduce edema pain is to obtain compression socks or garments. It seems silly at first, but these socks can work wonders. They stimulate blood flow, which reduces inflammation. Wearing these from time to time is one of the best and easiest solutions you can do.

Drink plenty of water

But the easiest solution of all is drinking water. Another common reason for increased inflammation is salt intake. Water helps counteract all the sodium and helps with pretty much every other aspect of your health. So, it’s a win-win.

In most cases, edema will go away on its own. However, it’s always wise to discuss this with your primary doctor because it could be a sign of underlying health concerns.
